The Balance and Guilt of a Working Mom

A toss up exists between working too much as a mother and not spending time with your kids. I hear about it all the time. “You work too much” or “You need to spend more time with your kid” or “I would never put my kid in daycare.”

Why are we so hard on and judgemental toward one another? It shouldn’t matter if a mom works or not. It doesn’t matter if she works from home or has a corporate job. Let me tell you, I’ve been on all ends of the spectrum and it’s HARD no matter what you do. Ultimately, it’s your decision and no one should tell you how to live your life.

I feel guilty sometimes because I have to work, but I need to hang with my son. Even after a productive day… the mom truth is that it is hard, even working for myself. The work and home balance is a constant juggle. I feel bad letting my autistic child watch tv when I need to answer clients. I feel a pang of guilt when I need to clear my mind.

I have to work. In fact, I am a bit of a workaholic. But only because, at the end of the day, I need to work. If I don’t work, I can’t focus to do anything. Something about being able to provide for my family and still be a mom helps center me. I tried the stay-at-home mom life and didn’t have my son in daycare. I’ve tried on many hats, but you have to find a balance between you, work, and raising a family. Add being a wife to the list, too. Let’s not forget about that. Finding that harmony proves tough and I am here to tell you there isn’t one right way. You simply learn to adapt and overcome. Stop judging other moms or wishing you had her life. Nothing worth having in life is easy.
